Herman van de Werfhorst holds a chair in Sociology at the Political and Social Sciences Department of the European University Institute, EUI. He is on leave from the University of Amsterdam. Herman works in the field of social stratification, social mobility, and inequality, with a focus on education and institutions. He combines cross-national comparative work with school cohort data.  

Herman is member of the Programme Committee of the National Cohort Study of Education (NCO), which is funded by the NRO/NWO. He is also member of the Supervisory Council of the SCP (the Netherlands Institute for Social Research), and of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Institüt für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung IAB, Germany.
